Positano is a extreme town of the Amalfi
Coast.
There are many different conjectures of its origin.
A recent study by Prof. Giuseppe Vespoli indicate that the Fenici,
and then the Greek were the first in habitants of the place; others
believe that it was founded by the Pestani when they were defeated
by the Saracens 915 A. D.
Testimonies of Roman age of which a Roman villa situated in the
basement, next to the church, a sarcophaces in the church of the
Rosary all brings back fondation of Roman workmanship, just before
first century A. D.
The noble patricians, enthralled by all the most beautiful places,
close this place as their imperial residence.
The legend links the name of Positano to an event of an ancient
Byzantine icon of a Madonna adorned with a precious stones, stolen
and they brought back by Saracens during night of terrible storm
at the words of (Posa Posa) repeated by a mysterious
voice.
The integral part of Republic of Amalfi, Positano was for a long
time under jurisdiction of the Benedictine Abbey, until becoming
rivals with Amalfi in trade and navigation thanks to ships built
in their shipyard and their nautical school that formed skilful
and courageous sailors.
Tourist resort one of the most renowned gently extends between mountains
and sea in an enchanting vision of hotel villas and white washed
house.
Dominating the centre, above all, is the splendid dome of the monumental
church of Santa Maria Assunta in glittering majolica tiles.
The interior hold a miraculous venerated byzantine icon of the Madonna.
